Diabetic Neuropathy Treatment: Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Diabetic neuropathy is damage to nerve fibers for prolonged periods of time. Therefore, this is more commonly seen in patients who have had diabetes for more than several years like 25 years or more.

So what does one feel or experience when affected by diabetic neuropathy? It usually starts with numbness in both feet which later on spreads upward to the legs. If there is poor sensation, injury becomes more common. And usually, diabetes is accompanied by poor blood circulation. Prevention is much better than cure. One way of preventing the onset of neuropathy secondary to diabetes is to try to keep your blood sugar at the normal level. One other important thing to remember is to always check your feet so that you know if you are developing any pressure sores. Consult your chiropodist annually who would check your feet periodically. Make sure that your shoes are a good fit and you take extra care in cutting your toe nails.

It is highly recommended that you undergo a series of tests to be sure you catch the condition on time. A comprehensive foot examination can be done to evaluate sensation and circulation. Nerve conduction tests will detect the travel of electrical impulses through nerves to check if they are still working or are working right. Electromyography, on the other hand, tests how well the muscles respond to electrical impulses passed on by nerves.
